The Rapa Nui people are the people who constructed and erected the giant “moai”, supersized statues carved from a single piece of stone.  Their haunting faces have intrigued people all over the planet for years – and archaeologists have worked tirelessly to unravel the mysteries of what happened on this remote island!

Sometime between 300 and 1200 AD, outrigger canoes filled with Polynesians and the supplies they needed to set up a new society arrived on Rapa Nui, a small remote island way off the coast of Chile.  They thrived, over time expanding to an estimated 7,000 people.  The island is roughly 8 x 13 miles in size.

As the population expanded, the resources dwindled – and the competition for those resources increased.  Many have said that the events that transpired on this island to deal with those issues are a model for what is happening on a planetary scale now.

Come with us and learn the history of this fascinating island – and we’ll go out together, when the light is just perfect, to create great art among the artifacts of this historical competition!

In addition to the moai, we will find small sea caves with petroglyphs

and an archaeological site where the famous Bird Man competitions were held (again with petroglyphs).

We’ll also hike around the quarry where the moai were carved

and an impressive volcanic crater.

We’ve also found a natural infinity pool with breaking waves behind it!

Many people think of the famous Easter Island moai as a handful of statues on a beach.  There are almost 900 of these incredible carvings, in various locations and states of repair.  We will be busy exploring and chasing great light and moon positions!

We have arranged for a totally flexible schedule, timed around the full moon, to come and go as we please to capture special moments.  We will have a guide and vehicle at our disposal.  Diane and I already know most of the sites on the island – and have a good sense of the light we want to find for each.

This is a great opportunity to build your skills at landscape photography.  We’ll also work on balancing flash with ambient light and fill flash.  This adventure is not overly demanding in a physical sense.
