June 20-27, 2017 - Full

Join us in June of 2017 as we explore the southern Oregon Coast, one of the wildest, least disturbed US coastlines. We have also incorporated, for 2017, a full day of photographing waterfalls in the Cascade foothills.

Here on the southern Oregon Coast, the Siskiyou Mountains plunge into the Pacific Ocean, creating dramatic cliffs, secret beaches, and offshore sea stacks.  The strong tidal variation presents opportunities to walk, at low tide, in areas that are normally underwater and photograph sea creatures clinging to rocks at eye level!

There are big trees here.  Coastal redwoods in California into southern Oregon that are easily 15 feet across!  And tall.  And Douglas firs, tan oaks, even myrtlewoods that are so big one could camp in the hollow center!  And rhododendrons that are three stories tall among the giant trees.  Add in coastal fog and sun and we have rays to play with!

We have timed this adventure – and located your room – to exploit great low tide opportunities.  Your room is poised over an incredible beach with great tidepools, outstanding offshore rocks, sea caves, nesting sea birds and more.  You’ll be able to run down to the beach to get reflections in the sand as the sun sets!

Did we mention sea arches?  Aggressive wave action grinds away at uplifted sea stacks, ripping holes through the rocks, creating arches, caves, tunnels, and blow holes.  We know where the best are – and when the light and tides are right to play with them!

This is a place for both dramatic nature – and dramatic light.  We’ll play with fog and strong light.  We’ll have significant low tides (timed for great light).  We’ll take wave stopping action – and smooth out the scene with long exposures at sunset!

We’ll position ourselves to play with strong light on patterns in wet sand!

We will find seals, sea lions, and a wealth of coastal birds. There will be osprey nesting and fishing along the beautiful rivers of the region!

Oh, and there are harbors.  And fishing boats.  And nets.  And crab traps.  And sea life clinging to the pilings of the docks.  And sea lions waiting to steal bait from crab traps!

For 2017, we are adding a day of waterfall photography! We'll spend the full day walking in a beautiful forest, moving among waterfall and rushing stream compositions!

If you are detecting enthusiasm, you are right.  We love this part of the coast.  We used to live here – we’ve hiked most of the beaches and have been most places in every light and weather.  When we lived here we “adopted” our favorite 3 mile stretch of the beach!  Bringing you here will be like coming home – and sharing all our secret places with friends!

A visit to Oregon is like landing in a cornucopia!  This is a land of fresh seafood, complicated Pinot Noirs, hazelnuts, blackberries, huckleberries… the list goes on.  It should be strawberry season when we land!  And we'll find wild salal and salmonberries to sample. We consider landing in Oregon an excuse to feast!  We’ll find some fish that made a direct journey from the dock to the restaurant!

  • Starts and ends in Eugene, Oregon
  • 7 nights of lodging – 5 overlooking an outstanding beach
  • All breakfasts and lunches, welcome and final dinners
  • Local transportation, photography instruction, prep materials included
