Watch for new dates

Southern Tanzania is a wilder place.  There are fewer human visitors, here, than in the busy parks to the north.  The animals are less accustomed to people and more focused on going about their business.

The massive size of the national parks and nearby wildlife reserves yields uninhibited animal movement and fully functioning ecosystems.

The surprise is that Southern Tanzania’s landscape is so stunning.  The sheer beauty of the Ruaha and Rufiji River systems is enough, but then paint scenic landscapes adorned with giant baobab trees and you have a region with unmatched beauty.  These have become our favorite landscapes in sub-Shahara Africa!

These rivers rise and fall with the seasons, swelling with rains that bring fresh greens to the surrounding landscapes.  When the countryside is beautiful, the animals also find a wealth of food whether they eat vegetation – or eat those that do.  They also spread out in the landscape and can be found almost everywhere.

This is when we have planned our Southern Tanzania Photography Safari.  We have picked our dates for the short dry season between two wetter seasons – to capitalize on a verdant landscape filled with healthy animals.

We’ll find the beautiful Ruaha River flowing among water smoothed rocks and hosting hippos and crocodiles in clean pools or sunbathing on sandbars.

We’ll create gorgeous landscape images with river scenes and giant baobabs.

Elephants and all kinds of hoofed animals will come to drink, along with troops of golden baboons.  Owls will roost near the river, waiting for nightfall to find food.  Birds of prey will frequent high branches, some over the water and others along paths where they might find smaller creatures.

The view from your window will feature the river.  Hippos will sing to you and the sunrise will reflect in the river.

We’ll find the Rufiji River, Tanzania’s largest river, flowing strongly.  It is a braided river, in many areas, reshaping sandbars with each change in river flow.

Its sandbars and quiet eddies will be filled with Nile Crocodiles of all sizes.  Scores of bloats of hippos (bloats is the official word for groups of hippos) call back and forth from the water to the shore.  This is the best place we have found, anywhere, for photographing clean looking hippos in and out of the water.

There is a wealth of birds here, seeking food from the Rufiji’s waters or from the insects that fly above.  Several impressive herons.

Great congregations of yellow-billed storks.  Stately saddle-billed storks.  Marabou storks, which spit their time between fishing and scavenging.  And an openbill stork that can’t fully close its bill.

But the kingfishers and bee-eaters steal the show.  We’ll find and photograph multiple kinds of colorful kingfishers perched above the water or diving after fish.

And the bee-eaters are amazing.  We’ll be able to work them up close – hopefully even find one with a freshly caught insect!

There is a giant kilometer-long high riverbank filled with literally hundreds of nesting cavities of bee-eaters.  Sometimes trees above the bank each have a hundred birds decorating them in bright colors.

As the Rufiji spreads out into lakes and oxbows, it provides many edges.  Great places to explore from land in safari vehicles and from water with our dedicated flat bottomed, comfortable safari boat.

Those wet areas expand and contract with the seasons – and are lined with woodlands.  They are great places to find elephants and giraffes and all kinds of other hoofed animals.

Here, too, we’ll seek, golden baboons and colobus monkeys!

These are also the places where we’ll seek wild dogs!  And where we’ll watch for lions and leopards.

The list goes on and on...

The Rufiji is the heart and soul of the Selous which has recently been named Nyerere National Park, Tanzania’s new largest national park and one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries on the planet.  That naming pushed Ruaha National Park into the status of second largest.

These are big, wild, natural places.  Places of beauty and free roaming animals of all kinds.  We’ll approach the areas in small planes which will land on gravel runways away from towns and other development.  We’ll get about in open sided safari vehicles and flat-bottomed boats (on the Rufiji).

Our lodgings are surprisingly sophisticated – and the main lodges have surprising cuisine, gorgeous views, free laundry, and internet.  You’ll be able to charge and download in your rooms.
