Overview of Workflow

How do we manage our images? How do we merge our field strategy with our digital darkroom strategy?

This is an interactive workshop. You’ll need your laptops, cameras and manuals. Expect to work on camera settings and to engage in exposure building exercises.

Date: December 2, 2018
Price: $500 - Free to participants in our Northern Costa Rica Photography Adventure (you need to buy an additional room night and meals)
Venue: Hilton Garden Inn, Liberia, Costa Rica

Price: $500
Free to participants of associated field photography adventure

Synopsis:
Today’s photographic equipment is better than any in the history of photography. It is loaded with bells and whistles that promise to do it for you. While those innovations can get you a “workable” image in most situations – they often make it more difficult to get the image you are trying to achieve.

This workshop will teach you how to use a mix of the great new features of today’s photography gear plus manual control to achieve, in the field, the images that convey your design intentions and set you up for an easy path through your digital darkroom.

We will help you build the fundamental understanding of how each move impacts the image you are about to create – and how various camera tools interact with each other. We make it simple – and in the end you are in control because you understand what you want to do, what tool to use, and how to adjust other settings to compensate for each move. You create better images – and get away from relying on the camera manufacturers’ magic!

Then, we'll put an image on the screen and work it, the way we normally would. Whether you prefer Photoshop or Lightroom, we'll show you an easy path through the process. You'll see how our workflow fits with our field techniques to make it all easy!

The beautiful thing about these one day "mini" Taking Control Workshops is that you can take them the day before an adventure starts. You learn new things - then have the entire field adventure to practice and get the routine down. Remember, if you are signed up for the adventure, you only need to cover your extra night's lodging and a day's meals.

Or, if you prefer, these one day "mini" Taking Control Workshops are in a great place for you to launch a solo adventure.

Agenda:
Setting up your camera(s) to take control (bring your cameras and your manuals)
Stops – the language of photography
Understanding the implications of ISO changes
Exposure modes – how they work, what they give, what they take away
Shoot, review, refine, repeat – the process of building exposures while refining your image
Histograms – Understanding them, using them, ignoring them.
Metering – how to use it and when to ignore it
Your composition – what are the drivers? How do they tell you what to do in exposure?

Workflow:
We'll test drive some images through our digital workflow - show you how we do it and respond to questions as we go!

We will provide ample handouts and worksheets – you’ll be able to repeat these steps with new cameras or to refresh your skills before a major outing.

Included:
1 day of classroom workshop
Powerpoint presentations
Handouts and worksheets

Not Included:
Lodging and meals
Parking
Transportation to and from workshop site
