Adventures and Workshops

Professional nature photographers Diane Kelsay and Bob Harvey design and lead nature and cultural photography adventures and workshops around the world. These are truly photography tours designed by photographers for photographers.

Diane Kelsay and Bob Harvey have used nature photography as a primary tool in the development, management and promotion of nature tourism - and in communicating about conservation issues. Projects and assignments have taken them to special and fragile natural and cultural locations around the world. Their photography has been published on all continents, in many forms, from multi-media productions, to websites, to books and magazines, and technical reports. Their work has changed the way visitors patronize natural and cultural destinations - and has resulted in the naming of new protected areas.

Nature Photography Adventures offers a selection of special nature and cultural photography adventures, to share special places and natural events with small groups of photographers who seek to improve their skills while photographing in unique natural and cultural settings.

"Wonderful adventures with great leaders-- Love Nature Photography Adventures" Patricia B

Each of these adventures is custom designed for the photography group - to get photographers to the right place at the right time. Many of the adventures share special and secret photography locations that Bob and Diane have discovered in their work - often locations that are unknown to tourism and often to other photographers.

Each adventure focuses on seeing and making stunning photographs - using equipment, skills, and technology to support design and composition. Our focus is on image design and we teach participants to understand and use technology to accomplish design goals. We prefer to "coach" individually in the field - and often deliver evening lectures.

Each adventure is designed to minimize impact on natural and cultural resources we visit - while getting our groups to special places at the best times. We frequently employ local guides to facilitate our explorations - and to add natural and cultural interpretation to our outings.

We also design in flexibility. As photographers, we are more concerned about being at the right place when the moment happens than sticking to a predetermined schedule. We adjust to weather, photographic opportunities, and the interests of the group we are traveling with.

We lean on our extensive tourism background to design adventures to both put you in outstanding positions for imagemaking - and lodge you in facilities that are comfortable and enable you to download images and charge batteries. Sometimes, to get close to where we need to be, the lodgings are more spartan... other times we find very enjoyable facilities.

Depending on the adventure, our outings may commence before dawn or linger until the last light has gone. Or, as in Iceland in the winter, the daylight may be short and, when the aurora presents itself, we may be out during the darker hours. Our timing is based on light, animal activity, and our objectives.

Most of the participants you will encounter on our adventures have been out with us before. The small groups we travel with tend to foster the development of long-term relationships - with participants "staying in touch" with each other and arranging to travel together again.

Many of our adventures are suitable for the "companion" who is not so serious about photography, but also has an interest in the great natural and cultural phenomena we witness. We strive to provide guides who will help us understand what we are seeing - and give us knowledge relative to the images we are making.

Note: Our photography adventures and workshops are non-smoking. Thank you.

So many birds! Such good photography opportunities. So little physical effort required. Forty percent of the planet's hummingbirds are found in Ecuador. Thirty-seven percent of the tanagers (which don't show up in the Old World at all). Conservation has teamed up with landowners to protect natural cloudforest habitats - and the result is birds sitting on branches predictably in a way you can photograph them. Did we mention Cock-of-the-rock? Or mountain tourcan? Small group so secure your space before it is gone!
