Borneo!
The word conjures up visions of deep dark rainforests with unidentifiable screams and calls.
If that scares you – stop here!
If it intrigues you, read on! And start packing your gear!

Borneo, the world’s third largest island, is situated in Maritime Southeast Asia close to Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi. The rainforests on Borneo are 140 million years old – long enough to develop diversity that is simply unimaginable! We are talking 3,000 species of trees, 220 species of terrestrial mammals, 420 species of resident birds, 440 species of fish! New species are being discovered here every year!
The highlights? Oh my, so many! Primates – orangutans, proboscis monkeys, gibbons, macaque! Sun bears. Pygmy elephants. Jungle fowl – the ancestors of modern chickens. Several hornbills and colorful kingfishers. The coluga - a flying mammal that is just amazing! Dazzling carnivorous plants. Rainforest trails and canopy trails. Photography from river boats.

Let’s start from the beginning. We have searched for years to find the right partner to offer a Borneo adventure. We had a list of what we wanted to accomplish – in terms of photography opportunities – and we kept searching for the right connections to build the itinerary. Everyone kept pushing us to “get on the circuit” like all the European and Asian visitors do and just make the best of what we found. Not good enough.
Finally, we connected with what turned out to be the right partnership. We have worked to piece together an adventure that “fits” our design purposes, mixes adventure with comfort, and sends all of us home with a true sense of what natural Borneo is all about. We tested and adjusted that itinerary in June 2024. We're excited and ready to take you there! Our adventure will take place in Borneo's north, in the Malaysian state of Sabah!

The orangutans. These “relatives of ours” have really expressive facial expressions, wild red-orange hair, and remind us of people we know. They have been on our photographic bucket list for years. So, we engineered plenty of opportunities to photograph orangutans, both in rehab centers and in the wild. Those opportunities also get us other really cool primates including gibbons, proboscis monkeys, and macaque! Oh, sun bear opportunities are co-located with the primate opportunities, so let’s photograph them, too!
The rainforest and its diversity. If you know us, you know we love to photograph the myriad array of patterns and colors presented in a lush rainforest environment. Think orchids and other blooms. Very unusual fungi. Exotic leaf patterns. All of those birds. Wait til you see the hornbills! And the kingfishers! Fog moving among giant trees. And an incredible opportunity to work the rainforest from up in the canopy on a well-constructed and situated canopy trail. Heaven. And, the rainforest surrounds us in most lodges with great ground trails and “lodge grounds” photography opportunities.
We’ll spend time in the Rainforest Discovery Center, on a boat on the Kinabatangan River, centers designed to protect and rehabilitate orangutans and sun bears, and the famous Danum Valley. The animals we photograph, with the exception of the sun bears, are wild and free. We’ll have ground trails, suspended trails, boardwalks, safari drives, night walks, and boat outings.
Photographically, this adventure will give us the chance to photograph a number of unique species. Sometimes the light will be challenging. Some animals will pose, while others will offer fleeting moments we’ll need to seize – or we’ll need to capture them in flight. We’ll find unique macro opportunities with fungi, interesting butterflies and other insects, and patterns in forest flora. And we’ll have the chance to photograph the rainforest from all angles, and with sun, clouds, and those clouds that hover between the treetops.
We’re prepared to help with all of that! We’ll bring along some LED lights to use to backlight unique leaves or light up a frog on a night walk. We suggest flash, as well – and we’ll help you excel at that.
There is a wealth of amazing experiences to be had on this adventure. And, we’ll work with you to come home with images that showcase this amazing island. And all the new skills you pick up as we work the challenges of photography.

So many birds! Such good photography opportunities. So little physical effort required. Forty percent of the planet's hummingbirds are found in Ecuador. Thirty-seven percent of the tanagers (which don't show up in the Old World at all). Conservation has teamed up with landowners to protect natural cloudforest habitats - and the result is birds sitting on branches predictably in a way you can photograph them. Did we mention Cock-of-the-rock? Or mountain tourcan? Small group so secure your space before it is gone! |
