Our Northern Costa Rica Photography Adventure focuses on northern Costa Rica and its Pacific Coast, visits to several unique ecosystems, and great opportunities for birds, monkeys, crocodiles, and frogs!

If you like photographing birds and monkeys, crocodiles and caiman, bats and iguanas with long lenses from stable boats – this is the adventure for you.  We have included three boat based outings in three completely different ecosystems – and our scouting outings have yielded some of our best ever monkey and crocodile images!

After years of searching, we have found a place where the lush tropical forests of Tenorio Volcano meet the dry tropical forests of surrounding lowlands where frogs are concentrated – and predictable!  Red eyed tree frogs.  Blue Jeans frogs.  Leopard frogs.  Those transparent frogs.  The list goes on!


And we found a tropical waterfall that just begs your photographic attention.  Pumped up with waters spewing from thermal springs this waterfall is poised on the shoulder of Tenorio volcano – where it plunges into an aqua pool right out of your dreams!

We’re dedicating part of this adventure to putting the coast in Costa Rica!  We found a perfect spot, away from the crowds, where we can have a secluded cove to ourselves and photograph.  In fact, we’ll spend three nights there – and greet dawn and sunset from their dining room!  And get sand between our toes!

We even scheduled a late day/sunset outing on a sailing boat – to explore beyond the edges of development for some great natural coast images! And, from that boat, we can spot jumping manta rays! And lots of birds!

And we’re not leaving the cloud forests or canopies out of this one!  We have included our favorite trails that mix the cloud forest floor and canopy – as we venture out onto amazing and stable suspension bridges!  We’ll photograph amazing forest patterns from both angles – and we often have surprise opportunities with birds and monkeys!

And we will get some quality time with hummingbirds – working an area with a number of really distinct species of hummingbirds is an important part of bringing photography gear to Costa Rica!

How will we do all this?  First, we’ll fly in and out of the new airport at Liberia (LIR) and skip the whole big city part of Costa Rica.

Then we will move immediately to the famed Monteverde region – locating ourselves in a great position to walk the ground trails of Monteverde Forest Reserve and explore the canopy trails on the edge of the Santa Elena Forest Reserve.



Finally, we venture to the shoulders of Tenorio Volcano – a massive cone thrust up into the clouds and its own national park.  We’ll base down where the swirling mists of the volcano give way to the sunny dry forests surrounding it – and explore both the wet and dry areas for great frogs, and outstanding waterfall, and a misty forest trail.  From that base we’ll also venture north to where waters from the volcano slow down and form wetlands – the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge – which are chuck full of exciting birds and crocodiles (we’ll photograph from a boat)!

Then, we'll wrap up on the beach – where we’ll spend three nights, tour Marino Las Baulas National Park mangroves by boat, have a salt water sailing outing along the Guanacaste coastline, and spend more boat time on a slow river in Palo Verde National Park.  Oh, and make some great art with the sunsets on our own beach!



Our time together in Costa Rica will provide a wealth of great opportunities to photograph birds, monkeys, and crocodiles – with long lenses.  We’ll work on techniques to manage and stabilize those lenses on moving boats.


We’ll also look at abstract compositions and studies in green on green in the deep cloud forest.  This is a good time to learn how to manage depth of field in a creative way – not just to have a little or a lot!

And we'll spend a great deal of time working with macros and close-up techniques!

Draped across the border between Brazil and Argentina, Iguazú Falls has the largest annual flow of any waterfall in the world. The brink stretches for 2.5 miles, broken into a number of individual falls. Devil's Throat is perhaps the most powerful section of this mammoth waterfall. Join us for an exciting exploration, from both sides of the falls, including outings by full moon light! You will learn new techniques and photograph wateralls and rainbows like you never have before! We'll also delve into the flora and fauna of this unique ecosystem!

Yellowstone Spring Photography Safari

Spring in Yellowstone means babies. Little bison, with umbilicals dangling, learning to romp. Elk quietly giving birth away in secret places. Bears leaving hibernation with their young. Botswana Photography Safari
