"Just returned from Costa Rica with Nature Photography Adventures! Lots of variety on the trip itinerary, lots to photograph and the logistics of the trip were great! Learned some valuable tips and tricks from both Bob and Diane! Would highly recommend." Ed McDermott

If you like photographing birds and monkeys, crocodiles and caiman, bats and iguanas with long lenses from stable boats – this is the adventure for you.  We have included boat based outings in three completely different ecosystems – and our past outings have yielded some of our best ever monkey and crocodile images!

After years of searching, we have found a place where the lush tropical forests of Tenorio Volcano meet the dry tropical forests of surrounding lowlands where frogs are concentrated – and predictable!  Red eyed tree frogs! And more!

And we found a tropical waterfall that just begs your photographic attention.  Pumped up with waters spewing from thermal springs, this waterfall plunges into an aqua pool right out of your dreams!

We’re not leaving the cloud forests or canopies out of this one!  We have included our favorite trails that mix the cloud forest floor and canopy – as we venture out onto intriguing and stable suspension bridges!  We’ll photograph amazing forest patterns from both angles – and we often have surprise opportunities with birds and monkeys!

And we will get some quality time with hummingbirds – working an area with a number of distinct species of hummingbirds is an important part of bringing your photography passion to Costa Rica!

How will we do all this?  First, we’ll fly in and out of the new airport at Liberia (LIR) and skip the whole big city part of Costa Rica.

Then, our very first full day will be spent in the magical Palo Verde protected area - on a boat in an exciting estuary full of crocodiles and birds and monkeys!

Then spend quality time in the famed Monteverde region – locating ourselves in a great position to walk the ground trails and explore the canopy trails on the edge of the Santa Elena Forest Reserve.

For part of our adventure, we'll set up camp in a small, beautiful lodge on the shoulders of Tenorio Volcano – a massive cone thrust up into the clouds and its own national park.  We’ll base down where the swirling mists of the volcano give way to the sunny dry forests surrounding it – and explore both the wet and dry areas for great frogs, an outstanding waterfall, and a misty forest trail.  From that base we’ll also venture north to where waters from the volcano slow down and form wetlands – the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge – which are chuck full of exciting birds and crocodiles (we’ll photograph from a boat)!

For 2027, we've added a new ecosystem - a rainforest, wetlands, and estuary in northwest Costa Rica that is teaming with birdlife. There are great birding platforms, trails, and a slow boat photography cruise that takes us close to where the river flows intoLake Nicaragua. We'll find a wealth of species - mammals, reptiles, amphibians and most especially birds!

Our time together in Costa Rica will provide a wealth of great opportunities to photograph birds, monkeys, and crocodiles – with long lenses.  We’ll work on techniques to manage and stabilize those lenses on moving boats.

We’ll also look at abstract compositions and studies in green on green in the deep cloud forest.  This is a good time to learn how to manage depth of field in a creative way – not just to have a little or a lot!

And we'll spend a great deal of time working with macros and close-up techniques!

Our New Northern Costa Rica Photography Adventure is set for January 27 - February 8, 2027.

It begins and ends at the northern Costa Rica international airport at Liberia.

Includes lodging, internal transportation, outings on boats, admissions to parks and canopy facilities, most meals, preparation materials, on-tour photographic coaching by our photography guides.

Group size will be kept low - 4-7 participants
