Itinerary

Our India Tiger Safari showcases three great tiger reserves – and has built in more time that most tiger safaris to give photographers more chances to see tigers – and to review early shots and modify strategies for the next foray into the reserves.

We’ll start with Pench National Park, the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book.  The Southern Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests of the Pench Tiger Reserve feature a network of seasonal streams that should be active while we are there, and a significant reservoir supports a wealth of mammals and birds.

From Pench we’ll move to Kanha National Park.  About thirty years ago, villages in the core of this reserve were relocated, creating a great grassland habitat that supports herbivores.  The Hard Ground Barasinha came back from the brink of extinction and now numbers over 800.  Between that and other herbivores – think yiger prey!  The tiger quest here will be in beautiful forests, near water holes, and among the grasslands.

From Kanha we’ll make our way to Bandhavgarh National Park.  Bandhavgarh is renowned for the highest number of tiger sightings.  The topography here features high ridges, undulating terrain, lush forests, and open meadows.  We’ll find tall grasslands, dense Sal forests and bamboo thickets – supporting a diverse collection of mammals and birds.  In addition to the Tiger, we’ll watch for leopards and sloth bears!  And wild elephants!

While our primary objective is Bengal Tigers, each of the three national parks boasts its own array of other wildlife – much of it related to mammals and birds you may have photographed in Africa – but quite distinct!  Think Cheetal (a spotted deer, not a cat), Sambar (another deer), Barking Deer, Swamp Deer, Blackbuck, Nilgai, wild boar, Gaur (impressive bovine, jungle cats and leopard cats, Bengal Fox, Indian Jackal, Dhole (wild dogs), and striped hyenas.

Then there are the birds!  The diversity of habitats yield great habitat for waterfowl, babblers, parakeets, drongos, francolins, peacocks, eagles, rollers, hornbills, woodpeckers, flycatchers – well over 350 species in total.

Our goal for this adventure is to put you in the best positions at the best time of the year in the best habitats to photograph tigers.

Our strategy is to have two photographers and a driver guide per vehicle.  If we have an odd number one of us (Nature Photography Adventures guides) will join one of those vehicles in the least favorable photography position, rotating with different pairs of photographers each day.

Mornings, our normal MO will be to rise before dawn, take tea or coffee and a snack – then head into the reserves while the tigers are most active.  Breakfast will happen in the reserve when the action quiets down.  Lunch back at the lodge.  Then the afternoon finds us back in the reserve on the trail of the tigers!  Dinner, downloads, review images, and recharge batteries – and get packed up for the next day!

We’ve been watching and working behind the scenes for several years to find the right combination of locations, seasons, facilities, and ground operators to support a carefully crafted foray into Tiger country!

One of the key elements has been park management – and India has recently taken steps to substantially reduce the hoards of safari vehicles surrounding cats that is becoming an increasing problem in some parts of Africa.

Another has been logistical – leading to photographers waking up in great places, moving out into the habitat at the same time tigers are most active, and each having good access to photographic angles in well-designed safari vehicles.

And, given the light issues with both the forests and the time of day that tigers are most active, the advent of mirrorless cameras and other technological advances that support low-light photography have made photographic success more probable.

The images here were provided by our ground operator.  We’re headed to India for a final scout in March of 2026.  Our images will be up on this page that April, along with any modifications we make after the scout.  It’s also possible there would be a small price change as lodgings and park fees could be amended.

We need a minimum of 3 participants and one leader to make this group viable. We have chosen one intimate lodge that only has five rooms. Those five rooms will dictate the final size of the group.

Conservation has teamed up with landowners to protect natural cloudforest habitats - and the result is birds sitting on branches predictably in a way you can photograph them.
