Kenya!
The setting for Karen Blixen’s “Out of Africa”!
A haven for species diversity!
Several outstanding locations to photograph big cats, rhinos, and elephants.
And, ground zero for a number of public, private, and non-profit efforts to save endangered species and habitats.
Our Western Kenya Photography Safari weaves together those four key themes!
In 2026 we are offering two back-to-back Kenya Photography Safaris.
The first, our Western Kenya Photography Safari, explores from the northern deserts of Samburu and Shaba down to the Masai Mara. Along the way we'll spend quality time in Ol Pejeta focused on rhinos and at Lake Nakuru where we'll find Rothschild's giraffes, a rift valley soda lake, and an abundance of bird species. Then it's off the the Masai Mara in seach of predators and their prey!
The second, our Southeast Kenya Photography Safari, focuses on Amboseli, with it's giant tuskers and lush oasis surrounded by a harsh desert, and the Tsavo region, home to the famous maneater lions and red elephants. We'll also find a clear spring filled with hippos and the opportunity to photograph underwater.
If you choose to join both safaris, your cost will be reduced by $1,000. |

In Kenya, the efforts to protect threatened and endangered species are evident everywhere – as are the results. As the programs to reduce poaching have borne results, the evidence is abundant, with big herds of elephants comprised of both grand tuskers and energetic youth!
Black and white rhinos, protected by law and by vigorous efforts to guard them, can be photographed in the wild. It is wonderful to see and photograph them in settings where they no longer need to “hide” from humans!

In western Kenya, we'll find three giraffe species! In the Samburu region, we'll find reticulated giraffes with their distinct white lines between brown patches.
In the south, we'll see Maasai giraffes, which we also find in Tanzania and other safari destinations.
And, a public/private/non-profit effort to bring back Rothschild giraffes has succeeded to the point where we can now easily photograph wild healthy populations in some protected areas! And, we have the opportunity to engage in the program up close and personally!

After gathering in Nairobi, we’ll quickly reposition to the Shaba and Samburu National Reserves. Referenced in Out of Africa and a big part of the story Born Free, Samburu is home to Grévy’s zebra and reticulated giraffes! And we’ll look for the long-necked gerenuk, known as the giraffe gazelle! Water is a central theme, in much of Sub-Saharan Africa when you are looking for wildlife, and Samburu’s Ewaso Ng’iro River is the answer. Its crocodile laden waters are the magnet which keep an abundance and diversity of wildlife in the area!

From Samburu, we’ll slip southward to the Mutara Camp and the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. In Ol Pejeta we’ll see an abundance of black and white rhino browsing and grazing in this island of protection! They will be mixed with a rich array of other ungulates – and predators!

South again, through rich farmlands, to Lake Nakuru National Park – we’ll find ourselves in the great rift valley, on a soda lake filled with flamingos, 400 species of birds, and home to a newly established population of Rothschild giraffe. You’ll not lack for opportunities to create great images here! Drowned forests, giraffes drifting through woodlands, even a small waterfall compliment the diversity of species we'll find here!

After our time at Lake Nakuru, we’ll navigate southward toward Kenya’s Maasai Mara Reserve – the part of the Serengeti ecosystem that extends northward from Tanzania into Kenya. Here, we'll find an abundance of predators and prey! Big cats - lions, leopards, and cheetahs - call this home, and feast on a wide variety of grazing and browsing ungulates. Hyenas and jackals will also show up in abundance, to clean up after the feline kills - along with countless storks and vultures.
Grasslands with tree-lined streams and rivers, and the dependable waters of the Mara River system, provide an ideal basis for a rich ecosystem – and we’ll work that ecosystem in search great photographic opportunities!
